Here's to the Books Our Ears Have Read

While on the return trip to Texas from our family vacation to Utah, our busy car load listened to audio books. They were mostly for my benefit as I was doing the driving and tend to get sleepy at the wheel.

My favorite audio book we listened to was "Savvy" by Ingrid Law. The narrator was good but I found my mind quickly engaged and stimulated by the whimsical wordsmithing. Humor tickling descriptions and delightfully inventive words had me smiling and even sometimes tearing up through eight CDs. This is some good writing!

Now, Ingrid Law is an accomplished author and Newbery winner so she may not fit the bill for our search as Chicks to find green authors, however she is clean. This book has strong emphasis on the importance of family unity and love. I really appreciated the tasteful and appropriate way she dealt with the teenage romance in this story. Witch makes this book very suitable for youth and the young at heart. So for these reasons I decided to high light this book for those of you, who like me, hadn't heard of it yet.

For generations, the Beaumont family has harbored a magical secret. They each possess a “savvy” – a special supernatural power that strikes when they turn thirteen. Grandpa Bomba moves mountains, her older brothers create hurricanes and spark electricity…and now it’s the eve of Mib’s big day. As if waiting weren’t hard enough, the family gets scary news two days before Mibs’s birthday: Poppa has been in a terrible accident. Mibs develops the singular mission to get to the hospital and prove that her new power can save her dad. So she sneaks onto a salesman’s bus…only to find the bus heading in the opposite direction. Suddenly Mibs finds herself on an unforgettable odyssey that will force her to make sense of growing up – and of other people, who might also have a few secrets hidden just beneath the skin.

2009 Newbery honor winner INGRID LAW is the New York Times Bestselling author of Savvy, and its new companion novel, Scumble. Ingrid is a fan of words and stories, small towns and big ideas. Born in New York, Ingrid's family moved to Boulder, Colorado when she was six years old. Now the mother of a teenage daughter, Ingrid still lives in Colorado, where she is working on new projects and trying her hardest to keep at least one plant alive.

I hope you all give it a chance; you won't regret it

  1. I love her bio! "...trying her hardest to keep at least one plant alive." She should try keeping a plant alive in Texas!
This actually sounds like a perfet fit for us right now. We do a lot of "out loud learning" as I like to call it. We are currently listening to "A Wind in the Door" by Madeleine L'Engle and "Macbeth" and "The Hobbit"
