Adoration - beginning of a YA Fantasy

This is my first official post as a member of Chicks in Lit and at first I wasn't sure if I should post a review or write about something else. Then I decided that I would like to share the beginning of a YA Fantasy novel I'm writing titled Adoration.I only started it a few days ago so there isn't much to it but I hope all of you enjoy what I have written so far.

Adoration

Katerina stepped off the boat that had only minutes before docked in Athens, Greece and took in the view around her. The ocean stretched on for miles and she could hear the distant murmur of village people going about their day. She took a deep, cleansing breath and her mouth filled with the salty tang of the ocean air. As she made her way into the village square Katerina stopped a young man, not much older than herself and asked if he could point her in the direction of the Starfish Inn. He answered her with a strongly accented voice, “You're one of those American tourists, aren't you?” “I don't see how that is any of your business, I was only asking where the Starfish Inn is located.” “I'll tell you only if you share your name. Mine is Cal.” Blowing out a deep breath, she said “If you must know my name is Katerina. Now will you please show me where the Starfish Inn is?” “Fine, let's go. Follow me but don't dawdle, I have places I need to be. Don't stop to talk to anyone unless you enjoy being pickpocketed.” “Hmph... Well I talked to you so does that mean you're a thief?” “Ha, wouldn't you like to know? Even if I was which I am not I wouldn't share that bit of info with you.” Cal came to an abrupt stop, causing Katerina to slam into his back. “How about a little warning next time you decide to stop so abruptly?” “Here's the Starfish Inn. You won't find better accomendations anywhere else in Athens.” “Wait! Can you tell me where the Cyprus Gardens are?” “I was told to go there and see the Cupid statue.” Cal turned around and smirked at her. “Oh so you're one of those people.” “One of what people?” “Those people who come here thinking that kissing the Cupid statue is going to free him. Let me tell you right now, that is just some stupid story made up by some lady to keep her daughter from giving up hope on finding her soulmate.” “By your reaction to my question I can assume that you have never been in love because if you had you wouldn't be such a cynic.”

The Rosetta Stone

No, I'm not talking about learning a new language.  I'm talking about THE Rosetta Stone, one of our earliest forms of written language.

The stone was found by Napoleon's men (1798) while invading Egypt.  They found ruins in the city of Rashid (Rosetta) and built into a wall was this stone!  It weighed three quarters of a ton and it contained three different types of writing.  The top part of the stone had Egyptian hieroglyphs, the middle had a hieroglyphic script called demotic, and the last piece was Greek script (Egypt fell into the hands of the Greeks and later the Romans).

The top portion of the Egyptian hieroglyphs was badly damaged and contained some curious ovals around certain engravings.  These ovals were coined 'cartouches' (cartridges) because they looked like the bullets in their guns.

These cartouches became the focus of attention over time, because it helped linguists decipher the other symbols.  The cartouches apparently contained names of important people such as Ptolemy and Cleopatra.

Through the Rosetta Stone we learn that language can be written in symbols (drawings that represent things based on their qualities).  One example of this is the vulture.  Horapollo, in the 4th century (wasn't published until 1505, patience people) said that the vulture symbolized: a mother, boundaries and foreknowledge.  Later linguists said that Horapollo was mostly full of it and that a vulture simply symbolized--mother.

The other form is what we use, the alphabet.  But as I was studying this, this morning I couldn't help thinking about how many symbols we use today in our language.  Look at texting and Facebook!

So I will you with two thoughts.  One, what symbols do you use in written language today?  And second if you were to use hieroglyphs to write your name, what image would you draw?

Hello World,
This is my first Blogging experience. For some crazy reason I seem to avoid technological advances. Considering how old Blogging is I guess that's rather pathetic. But I have a great tutor, so I'm allowing my mind to be broadened.
Let me introduce myself If you have a minute. I'm nearly twelve years married to my high school sweet heart and now four kids later, he is still the light of my life.
I studied dance in collage. I still have a great love for dance but my aspirations have changed. The lord has help me understand that I can also express myself through writing and with his abounding help I have undertaken something I never imagined doing; writing a book. Working on this project has been an incredible learning experience for me and I'm eager to learn from others experiences as well.
And this is my hope for this Blog; to find a network of people who also want to share ideas, encouragement and enthusiasm for writing. Please won't you join us!

Sil The Supernatural Chick

I love to read, write and cook and when not too exhausted I do yoga too. I was born and raised in Argentina and moved to U.S. when I was fourteen.
I attended the University of Utah where I studied Spanish Literature. My first published novel, Veiled is a Supernatural, Speculative Christian Fantasy, Y.A that was just released in April 2011.
The goal for Chicks in Lit is to meet, network and help promote other authors who are committed to writing good literature for our children to read.
We are of the opinion that there are a LOT of good books out there and a lot of good authors that need to be spotlighted. If you are one of them let us know!
We welcome any author who writes "clean" books of every kind.

Sil,
The Supernatural Chick
